Jaime Hayon for Barceló Torre de Madrid Hotel
The honour of designing Spain’s latest and most glamorous hotel, Barceló Torre de Madrid, was something of great personal significance for the larger than life designer, Jaime Hayon. As a native Madrileño, Hayon has established himself as one of the design industry’s most renowned talents – Wallpaper Magazine naming him as part of the top 100 most influential creators from the last decade – and with good reason. His scope of works range from product and furniture design to interiors and art – over the years manifesting in to his now signature style of postmodern forms, rich colours and metallic hints – all of which are embodied in Torre de Madrid.
The grand lobby sets the atmosphere for the hotel’s overall aesthetic, displaying a cast of bold sculptural forms (the large bear being a surreal nod to Madrid’s coat of arms) and adorned in a selection of furniture from some of Hayon’s most prolific design collaborations with brands such as Fritz Hansen, &Tradition, Gubi, Arflex, Cassina, BD Barcelona and more.
Bringing a level of grandeur an luxuriousness to a fittingly iconic building at the heart of the city, Hayon’s sophisticated execution throughout each space evokes a kind of joy in ones soul – each detail exuding its own elegance but somehow not detracting from another. The hotel embodies a diverse selection of colours and tones that come together to form the perfect palette, overflowing with richness and warmth, a reflection of Spain itself and an ode to Hayon’s creative vision.

Through his inherent ability to transform spaces into wondrous experiences, Hayon take visitors of Barceló Torre de Madrid on a visual journey through Spain’s heritage, commissioning photographers Klunderbie to create a series of works that feature iconically Spanish subjects rich in both culture and elegance. The public areas throughout the hotel are populated with subtle hints of Hayon’s emphatic personality – illustrating his confidence and ingenuity, evidently resulting in one the most outstanding examples of Hayon’s interior portfolio.
Spread across a grand nine floors whilst maintaining a ’boutique hotel-like’ atmosphere, Barceló Torre de Madrid is one of Jaime Hayon’s most accomplished interiors yet. The Spanish Designer has not only created an iconic hotel for his home town, he has created a destination for visitors, a destination that pays homage to the wonder of the city and to a tower that will forever be a symbol of ‘Modern Madrid’.
