Helle Mardahl
Helle Mardahl is a multidisciplinary artist and designer based in Copenhagen, Denmark. She works across sculpture, installation, painting, fashion and interior design – her scope of work and artistic capabilities never cease to impress us.
Having graduated from Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, London in 2001, Mardahl has since exhibited her collections in galleries and art spaces across the world.
She recently launched her first lighting collection at 3 Days of Design in Copenhagen. Titled, The Candy Collection, the lights are based on Mardahl‘s childhood memories of the sweet shops she would visit, and born out of a nostalgia for a time where dreams of opening her very own candy store coloured her world.
The Candy Collection features both table lamps and hanging pendants in organic shapes, each bearing brass fittings and fabric cables. They are at once bold and unassuming. Exuding the kind of warmth only given when something has been worked by hand.
Mardahl describes “the colours, the textures, the desire, and the childlike anticipation” she revelled in whilst developing the range.
“My Candy Collection is filled with possibilities engaging all senses,” Mardahl says. “I wish for a sight to behold and cherish, where every piece is unique and one-off.”
Each glass is hand blown resulting in odd shapes and figures unique to each piece, welcomed imperfections and indicative of the artist’s process.
Unplugged they are themselves commanding objects and when switched on, the lamps emit a soft glow, reminiscent of luminous bonbonnières in attractive shades of blue, orange, pink and yellow.
The appeal of her work is that each new development from her continues to surprise and delight. Forever experimenting and indulging her love for material, we never know what’s coming next Helle Mardahl.
