Arent&Pyke were thrilled to be shortlisted in the 2012 Sydney Design Awards for’Residential Decoration’.

Unfolding over four years and involving finely resolved details, slowly and meticulously layered over time, this project responded to a brief that asked for a natural, relaxed home that was comfortable to live in, could accommodate a significant Australian art collection, and was full of life and warmth. The client’s growing collection of art defined the interior approach. Inside, a mix of new and vintage design pieces – mid-century furniture, ceramics, rugs and textiles – are counterpointed by a large collection of books, sculpture and paintings curated to complement one another and create a mood that is evoked by the art and echoed in the furnishings and design details. The east-facing site with its long and narrow conservatory was under construction as we embarked on the project. Responding to this and the opportunity presented by a soaring light-filled void over the main staircase, we selected an earthy, refined materials palette including solid timber and stone to work with the architecture while providing a canvas for the decorative scheme.
