the charming Santa Clara 1728 hotel, Lisbon
Set innocuously on a romantic square in one of Lisbon’s oldest neighbourhoods, Santa Clara 1728, is a super chic and intimate guest house with the feel of a family home, created by design-led hotelier João Rodrigues.
The design and renovation of the charming traditional 18th-century building was completed by local architect Manuel Aires Mateus and the finishes imbue a sense of warm serenity within the bustle of the old cultural quarter of Lisbon.
A parity of fine modern lines and respect to the building’s heritage and location create a pleasing juxtaposition
Warm limestone meets heavy linens, the palest timber, and beautifully curated mid-century furniture …. while modern clean lines enhance the period details with respect and restraint.
While the ‘home-away-from-home’ notion is all too frequently badged to boutique hotels, it seems the finer detail of the interior, the family service, and thoughtful common spaces authentically deliver comfort and warmth alongside an impressive design of elegance and restraint.
