Kelly Wearstler designs San Francisco’s Proper Hotel
Proper Hotel is just that, a hospitality project of accommodations conceptualised with the intention of delivering proper food, proper service and proper amenities. When Kor Group recruited Kelly Wearstler to design their Proper Hotels their intentions were modest, the result of their first incarnation in San Francisco however, is anything but.
With four more locations in the works: Downtown L.A., Hollywood, Austin and Santa Monica, Wearstler’s approach to the design of Proper Hotels is inspired by conjured up backstories of each city’s residents.
The designer focused on retaining and restoring as much of the original 1900s flatiron personality as possible, realising a maximalist aesthetic throughout the buildings eight-storeys. Employing a palette of bold, juxtaposing colours, shapes and materials, Wearstler layers Victorian florals with modern geometrics, mixing and matching the old and new to fill spaces with furnishings evocative of an eclectic jewel collection.
“San Francisco is a very classic city.” The building’s “Beaux Arts-style” and “hints of 1940s Cubist design… references were the jumping-off point for me” says Wearstler.
With site-specific designs brought to life around the local spirit of each city – we’re excited to see what the collaborative efforts of Kor Group and Kelly Wearstler brings to their next project, Proper Hotel, Austin.
