Todd St. John
Todd St. John‘s studio is teeming with life, predominately inhabited by wooden characters – from his animation occupation, ‘HunterGatherer’ – ready to bounce into life, his furniture pieces are his adult side, the distinguished gentleman refined and cultured amongst a playground of curiosities.
You almost feel like he had a certain alter ego in mind when crafting his furniture pieces, a real connoisseur, articulate and reserved, well read and well bred. The ‘Relief Credenza’ is brutalist in form, a solid heirloom with masculine embellishment. His ‘Folding Lounge Chair’ looks perfectly poised for a whiskey sunset companioned with its lovingly crafted ‘Side Table’. His ‘Room Divider’, still handsome, is the feminine exception with its sensuous curves and brushed fine surfaces that softly reflect light.
It’s also St. John’s choice of materiality that accentuates this characterisation. Warm solid walnut with custom brass fixtures, surfaces are dull or brushed not showy but quietly glowing with pure honesty. His marquettes are magical studies of a curious mind that beautifully illustrate the crossover from play to functionality whist exploring materiality.
Named in the American Design Hot-List we’re looking forward to more from this talented man.
