Dreaming of Rio with Studio Arthur Casus
Although, alas, we are not in Rio for the Olympics we can but dream. Apartment Urca, by Studio Arthur Casus would be a perfect vantage.
The ever-inspiring Brazilian design scene has consistently set the benchmark and although São Paulo is currently the darling, Rio de Janeiro certainly delivers its share of amazing architecture to complement its beauty. Rio’s incredible position, nestled between mountain and sea, almost begs for sensitive and well-considered modernist architecture. Case in point – Apartment Urca by Brazilian architect, Studio Arthur Casus. “In Rio, the landscape comes to you,” says Casus.
Perched boldly, yet seemingly effortlessly, between Sugar Loaf Mountain, and overlooking Guanabara Bay in Rio’s Urca district, the penthouse apartment enjoys extraordinary views in both directions. The brief for Arthur Casus was clear – to maximize landscape vistas on both sides – the bay and the mountain, and to bring as much light as possible into the three floors. In successfully achieving this, the architecture pays respect to the humbling natural environment surrounding it. The design also provides the client a space that delivers ease for privacy and partying, in equal measure.
The minimal and generous three-story residence allows the view to be the hero. White walls, sliding glass doors, numerous terraces, and skylights, and an abundance of light are complemented by considered furnishings that pay homage to the heart and history of Rio – a vast and varied collection of modernist design, contemporary artworks and custom pieces utilising local craftsmanship.
While Studio Casas has certainly delivered a plethora of covetable design in Brazil and beyond, we can’t think of a better place to celebrate the Olympics than here at Apartment Urca.
