COS x Dia:Beacon – An Art Inspired Capsule Collection
No stranger to crowd-pleasing collaborations, fashion label COS has partnered with the Dia Art Foundation to support artist Dorothea Rockburne’s installation of large-scale works at Dia:Beacon, in upstate New York. Inspired by Rockburne’s work and informed by mathematical explorations of geometry and set theory – COS has designed a men’s and women’s capsule collection as part of their SS18 line.
The collection includes shirts, dresses, pants and bags, drawing on the artist’s affinity for graphic shapes and working with creased paper.
“We drew much inspiration from the crisp and folded lines of Rockburne’s ‘Locus’ series”, says COS creative director Karin Gustafsson of the artist’s six paper etchings created between 1972 and 1975. The folding, draping and clean colouring of both the garments and accessories alludes to the minimalist, papery qualities of Rockburne’s work.
“We have admired Dorothea Rockburne’s work for many years,” says Gustafsson, who first saw pieces from the visual artist exhibited at MoMA in 2014. The brand’s creative director captivated by the “subtle power of her work” explains: “when developing our current collection her work instantly came to mind for its precision and tactility”.
The capsule collection pays tribute to the Rockburne’s mathematical approach to art. Silhouettes and fabric selections mirror the artist’s linearly-natured works.
