Ett Hem, Stockholm – A home away from home
Sitting peacefully in the corner of a residential street in Stockholm’s Larkstaden district is the heavenly Ett Hem, which literally and fittingly translates as ‘home’. Ett Hem delivers the home-away-from-home atmosphere that one desires when embarking on a journey to a far away land. Our founders, Juliette and Sarah-Jane have been staying here during their Scandinavian design tour with Great Dane Furniture and have described the experience as ‘game-changing’, like no other hotel they have ever stayed and of course have devoured every design detail… Built in 1910, during the ‘Arts and Crafts’ movement, the fairytale like red brick townhouse was once a private residence and over the years has been delicately transformed into one of Stockholm’s finest boutique hotels.
The process of transforming home to hotel (and still creating a feeling of ‘home’) was one of great thought and consideration from Interior Designer, Ilse Crawford, who worked with owner Jeanette Mix to ensure the unique personality of the building was retained and that the interiors spoke to the architecture rather than over it. The best collection of furniture and Scandinavian antiques were sourced for the hotel, resulting in an enchantingly eclectic mix of old and new, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in true Scandinavian life. Just as one would be invited to a friends home for a delightful party or rendezvous, Ett Hem invites guests to help themselves to a book from the library, a glass of wine from the kitchen or to lounge in front of the fireplace on a snowy winters’ afternoon.
The Ett Hem kitchen is just as you’d imagine – the heart of the hotel, filled with the sweet aromas of baked goods and stocked with a generous amount of organic produce, it’s a delight in itself. Guests are treated to an ever-changing menu enlivened by classic Swedish flavours, all of which are sourced locally from fair trade markets and prepared to enjoy alongside fellow guests at the kitchen table or perhaps looking out at the garden from the Greenhouse…
If you have the strength to pull yourself away from Ett Hem’s charm, you needn’t go far to find more delight. A short stroll from the hotel is where you will discover an array of boutiques offering the best of Scandinavian design and a burgeoning food scene, all the while, observing the streets lined with Sweden’s pretty turn-of-the-century architecture.
It is no wonder that Ett Hem was voted ‘Best Dressed Hotel 2015’ by Mr&Mrs Smith, a true reflection of authentic, honest design with a hint of magic.
