McKinley Bungalow, Montauk

Taking inspiration from the wild, salt-weathered coastline of Montauk is the new ranch-style residence from Studio Robert McKinley, McKinley Bungalow. With a portfolio of work in Montauk, including The Surf Lodge and Ruschmeyer’s Hotel, interior designer Robert McKinley and his wife Kate Nauta have continued their contribution to the area with this intimate four-bedroom, three-bathroom home.

Originally built in 1978, the bungalow’s design adopts a clean white palette accented with natural oak floors and architectural details such as exposed timber beams and a plaster fireplace.
The interior and exterior spaces exhibit a perfect mix of eclectic and contemporary design furniture, homewares, linen, appliances and accessories, and believe it or not, they are all directly shoppable.

“We were inspired to create a residence that truly feels like a dream home, ideal for relaxed beach getaways,” explains Robert McKinley. “To me, summertime is always about entertaining with friends at home, so we wanted to collaborate with our favourite artists, makers and manufacturers to produce a space that would bring people together.”

Open plan communal areas foster a sense of gathering and encourage entertaining with friends and family. Meals can be shared formally in the large dining room space complete with a refined timber table and vintage dining chairs, or for a more casual option is the breakfast nook with built-in bench seating.

At the end of a sun-drenched day, comfort is found in the library where a plush Moroccan daybed is lined with pillows and walls are draped in soft linen curtains for intimacy. A deep, red lime-wash paint adorns the walls in reference to the rich colours of Mediterranean seaside towns.

The idea of a well-designed sleepy bungalow shack, only five minutes drive from Ditch Plains beach – a cult surfing favourite – is sure to draw a waiting list. It’s a new kind of venture for Robert McKinley – we’ll be dreaming of the McKinley Bungalow all summer.
