Apartment of art dealer Miquel Alzueta, Barcelona
The contemporary Barcelona apartment of art dealer and gallery owner Miquel Alzueta reveals a creative life as an avid art collector and antiques enthusiast.
The tale of Miquel Alzueta is one of a passionate collector who has become a successful curator. Alzueta’s appetite for art, antiques, and interiors have evolved into a thriving business. Galeria Miquel Alzueta is an impressive 500m2 gallery space in a former factory in the heart of Séneca Street, Barcelona’s design district. The gallery combines contemporary art, with the most prestigious architecture, design, and antiques from the 20th Century.
It’s the private residence of Michale Alzueta and wife África Posse near the centre of Barcelona, however, that is possibly the greatest example of Alzueta’s design passions, his love of art, and an innate sense of restrained elegance.
Having long been attracted to art and furnishings from the modern mid-century era, during his time in Paris, Alzueta began to start appreciating and then collecting the influential French designers of the era such as Jean Prouvé, Charlotte Perriand, and Serge Mouille.
The apartment is a wonderful canvas from which the masterpiece has been crafted: white walls, unique geometric marble-tiled floors, high ceilings and 1940s French-inspired architectural detail. The space is grand, flooded with light and an overall sophistication. The layering of furnishings is considered and modern icons are mixed with the curator’s eye and a quiet confidence that is delivered with relative ease from those well versed in the art, antiques and design of the last century.
