Hotel Quinta Da Corte, Portugal

The transformation of the dilapidated, 200-year old Quinta Da Corte vineyard into the charming hotel that stands there today, is nothing short of impressive. The property and vineyard in Portugal’s Douro Valley, were purchased by French winemaker Philippe Austruy in 2012, who commissioned renowned French design architect, Pierre Yovanovitch to turn it into a world-class country inn.

With the feeling of a contemporary farmhouse, the property marries old world charm with modern, artful features. It’s a renovation that respects the existing structure and dwells on comfort and sophistication.

There is a classic kind of farmhouse dining table in the centre of the eating room, and overhead hangs a a lighting installation of pastel balloons. The main bedroom is dressed in crisp, white sheets and practical inclusions, next to an opulent bathroom with green glazed tiles and a clawfoot tub.

The main buildings on the property have been converted into multiple contemporary spaces; a library, two common rooms, seven bedrooms and a dining room. Each has been furnished with custom pieces and antiquities, accented with contemporary artworks and sculpture.

Ceramic pieces commissioned from local potters are scattered throughout the farmhouse, a celebration of artisanal traditions. A new building was constructed for the winemaking, next to a tasting room and events space. The view from Quinta Da Corte over the rolling hills of the valley are magnificent. Even better observed from the sleek, swimming pool.
