The Slow, Bali

We’ve all been coveting a getaway to The Slow, Bali. Boutique accommodation at its finest, The Slow is situated along the expansive coastline of Canguu, positioned exactly where you’d want to be on the island amongst a community of expats, surfers and forward-thinking artists.

An experiment in tropical brutalism, the space offers all-day dining, drinks, and art, all gently geared toward rest and rehabilitation and ‘slow living’ values.

The founders behind the resort are ex-Ksubi Australians, Gareth Moody and George Gorrow, alongside Gorrow’s partner, Cisco Tschurtschenthaler who have produced 12 suites, simple and usable communal areas and spaces that encourage you to ‘rest your bones, stir your senses, and expand your mind’.

“Our return to Bali came off the back of a stint in New York where the motto was to live fast and die young,” Gorrow said. “Our lifestyle was completely reversed on the island, and we found ourselves on a new wave of living slow.”

The design draws on examples of modernist architecture and greenhouses, as well as New York’s galleries, Brazilian architecture and of course, open-air island living in Bali.

Cane armchairs, softly upholstered sofas and raw timber dining tables are surrounded by perforated timber partitions, vertical screens and indoor gardens. This softness of greenery and wicker are juxtaposed with the harshness of polished concrete flooring. The exteriors are clean and minimalist with vertical timber panelling, cement walls and an abundance of towering palms.

The Slow offers an indulgent experience where guests are immersed in Gorrow’s personal art collection, with sound by LA’s Reverberation Radio and food prepared by Chef Shannon Moran who takes you on a sensory trip through Europe, South America and Asia. A modern hotel experience with all the necessities of an island retreat.
