Amidst the hustle and bustle of Manhattan, this West Village pied-a-terre is Arent&Pyke’s first foray into designing abroad – as recently seen in Vogue Living. Owned by an Australian family of 5 – it was important to the clients to maintain the Australian ‘liveable & comfortable’ aesthetic when staying in New York.
While blessed with a rare courtyard garden in the heart of Manhattan, the indoor space was intimate – so every element was specific and considered. Clean lines provided by the Cappellini sofa and Minotti armchair kept the apartment uncluttered. With a focus on fewer more significant pieces of furniture the Utrecht chair was perfect for creating a sense of comfortable gravitas with a small footprint. Colours were kept light and bright to keep the scheme dynamic, while brave use of pattern created visual interest without the need to over-decorate. Custom bedheads made from dramatic Christopher Farr fabric bring interest to the bedroom, paired with gorgeous Bemboka bedlinen to create a peaceful mood . Texture, rugs and upholstery rendered the apartment soft and comfortable in the colder seasons without being overbearing in the warmer seasons. Key to the scheme was the beautiful colour-blocked ‘Zap’ rug, by The Rug Company in New York, which achieved a bright and vibrant aesthetic and anchored the scheme as a whole.
The end result was an urban oasis for a client that revels staying in the most exciting part of the city, yet desires their personal space to be calm, comfortable and stylish.
