Chievo Country House

Just outside of Verona near the Adige River, the town of Chievo now houses a particularly elegant and modern country home. The structure is a converted stone barn, which has been stripped and fit out by Milan-based architecture practice, Studio Wok.

The 3-storey family home dances between a celebration of the origins of the historic building and its contemporary interpretation and material identity.

Incorporating energy efficiency, the use of local and recycled materials and the preservation of the  landscape were all foundations of the initial brief. The focal points in living areas – outdoor and indoor – have been repositioned to take advantage of sweeping country vistas and to bring attention to the pool.

The material use of stones, off-white Biancone marble sourced from local quarries and river pebbles pays homage to the location and complement’s Verona’s local architecture.

Inside, decoration is minimal, and close attention is paid to the smooth Vincenza stone used for flooring with which birch plywood cladding on the walls lives in harmony. The space is warmed by the abundance of natural light, fed into the house by both small and large windows as well as skylights on the uppermost floor.

The garden has been purposefully designed around an existing magonolia tree, which is the perfect metaphor for this country home, one which aims first and foremost, to celebrate landscape it has been built upon.
