Sound View Greenport: Greenport Hotel

Perched upon a private beach on the North Fork of Long Island, sits the idyllic Sound View Greenport Hotel –  or in other words, heaven on earth…

Owned by hotelier group Eagle Point Hotel Partners, what was originally home to the Greenport motel of the 1950s has been transformed under the creative direction of New York design group Studio Tack in 2017. Sound View Greenport boasts panoramic ocean views and embodies a New England aesthetic, paying tribute to the history of the 19th Century whaling village in which it’s located. The single-storey hotel sits directly on the beach and overlooks the ebbing tides of Long Island Sound. Guests are treated to rooms that open onto waterfront decks, granting direct access to the rocky foreshore. Imagine sipping a glass of wine after returning from a day exploring one of the many local Long Island wineries, and enjoying that glass on your own private deck, as the sun sets over the Atlantic Ocean…

Sound View’s interior embodies the soul and feeling of a seaside cabin, with nautical themes woven into the design. The hotel’s 55 rooms are decorated with cedar wood wall panelling, metal sconces and large glass windows to take advantage of the view. Deep reclining deckchairs scatter the balconies and have been cleverly designed using sailcloth fastened with rope. The cedar wood panelling is repeated in the bed bases, giving the beds the appearance of being boats gently floating out at sea. The sound of waves crashing and the smell of sea salt and cedarwood join together to create a memorable, sensory experience.

The bathrooms are small and charming, featuring stark white rectangular tiles against hexagonal flooring – a motif that is carried throughout the hotel. Malin+Goetz products are on offer for guests to use.

For eating, Guests can choose from either The Halyard Restaurant, a lounge café, a piano bar or a poolside bar, which are all steered under the capable hands of chef Galen Zamarra. The menu “embodies the property’s nautical geography and history with fresh produce, seafood and wine from the North Fork and Atlantic Seaboard”, says Zamarra.

The Halyard’s interior centres around a large, open dining room, peppered with timber tables. Large windows overlook the ocean allowing ample sunshine to pour throughout the space. The convex ceiling is supported by large wooden beams – another nautical influence. The focal point of the restaurant is a decadent bar, surrounded by leather bar stools and offering guests an extensive cocktail menu to choose from.

For those who wish to mill the hours away outside, a large pool surrounded by daybeds, pool loungers, and umbrellas beckons you. Just inside you will find a lounge café and bar, which has been thoughtfully decorated with wicker love seats, reminiscent of the whaleboats used in the village’s early days.

There is a distinct shift in mood when entering the hotel’s Piano Room. The room resembles a captain’s headquarters; dark timber stained walls, deep red mahogany booths, a grand piano, chandelier and moody lighting create a cosy and intimate space that stands apart from the rest of the hotel.

The recent renovation of the Sound View Hotel has reinvigorated this landmark in Greenport, Long Island whilst adding intelligent modern design and elegance to a classic, coastal aesthetic.

The Sound View Greenport is on our list for next summer – our bags are practically packed already.
