Alexis Christodoulou

Cape Town based artist, Alexis Christodoulou makes 3D renders of an imagined world, rich in architectural vision.

His scenes depict utopian modernist interiors – stripped bare of any inessential elements and instead focusing on the perfect texture, structure and colourways resulting in a purity of space.

Whilst his works represent fictional spaces, there are often references to real-life modernist design. There is common reference to brutalist architecture in his work (such as the circular windows that seem to be so prevalent) but there is also always a softness to them; a beautifully rendered cascade of a curtain, the drape of a tablecloth, the outward unfurling of a palm.

It’s interesting to learn that Christodoulou only started making his works recently. A writer and winemaker, he began experimenting with the 3D modelling program SketchUp five years ago and the self-taught artist has been garnering attention for his evocative works ever since.

Particularly impressive are his renders of stone aggregates like terrazzo, the nuance of his shadows and the luminous channels of water that form pools in his artworks.

Christodoulou’s worlds are so aesthetically pleasing and structurally organised, they are begging for someone to them to recreate them in real-life, and so are we.
